Director Sarah Gavron and writer Abi Morgan bring us this movie. The star-studded cast includes Helena Bonham Carter, Meryl Streep and Carey Mulligan.

Mulligan plays Maud Watts, who is a working woman and a mother inspired to join the fight for what she believes is fair.  While some of the characters in the movie are real people from history, Maud is a fictional character who has been created to drive the story along. Streep plays Emmeline Pankhurst in a brief but memorable appearance and Bonham Carter is Edith Ellyn.

Reviews so far for Suffragette have been overwhelmingly positive. The acting performances of the main actresses have been particularly lavishly praised, with Bonham Carter and Mulligan excelling in their roles. Indeed, there is already talk of Academy Award nominations for both of them. Among the rave reviews so far there has been some very positive feedback at the London Film Festival. Clare Stewart is director of the festival and she calls is an “urgent and compelling film”.

This is no air-brushed account of history. It shows us the terrible realities of being a revolutionary during a harsh, turbulent period in our history. During the movie the women are abused, sent to prison and force fed, with many of the scenes being surprisingly harrowing.
