Why Women Are Choosing to Travel Alone

What is it about solo travel that makes most women travel alone? I think no one could aptly put it better than Albert Einstein when he said: “The woman who follows the crowd will usually go no further than the crowd. The woman who walks alone is likely to find herself in places no one has ever been before.” Wait, how could a brilliant mind like Einstein know? Coming from a man’s perspective, he said it beautifully but coming from a woman’s point of view, here are reasons why women like us are choosing to travel alone these days:

1. Solo travel gives us a liberating experience

Believe it or not, solo travel can give us so much freedom that we sometimes couldn’t get a grasp of it but either way it provides us with a liberating experience. Who cares if we get drunk till the wee hours of the morning or kiss and do silly things with a stranger? Who makes it a big deal if you don’t shower for a few days and if you have ugly uneven skin tone? See, that’s the thing about women spending time alone while they travel. They break free from society’s expectations and just do their thing. Don’t you think it’s such a pretty liberating experience then?

2. Solo travel allows women to think and clear their mind

As you take that 12-hour long train journey from Bangkok to Chiang Mai or that excruciating 24-hour bus ride from Luang Prabang to Hanoi, you kinda have to admit that you have plenty of time to think and ponder about your choices. It makes you question yet it gives you the freedom to think. What will happen when you get back home? Will you still go on with your previous job or a career change is badly needed? Will you go back to law school or pursue your life long dream of becoming a travel writer? Will you sell all your properties and move to Asia for good? Will you get married or opt to finally have the courage to be alone for some time? Ladies, allow yourself to think, as you won’t probably have the time to do this once you get back to business.

3. Solo travels gives you the chance to listen to your inner instinct

When did you last listen to your inner soul? If you’re planning to go out partying tonight but can’t quite figure out how to come home safely, pay attention to your instincts. Should you take that dark alley to reach your hostel in less than 5 minutes? Or should you just stay in for the night and read your favourite book as you take a sip of that jasmine tea? If you are quite hesitant about your choices, make it clear to listen carefully to your inner instinct as it will not lead you astray and will not definitely leave you in a very bad situation.

4. Solo travel is a good way to practice that inner fierceness in you

How many times have you been harassed by those men as you wait for the next available tuktuk to grab? How many lustful stares have they thrown at you before you finally give them your out of this world fits? Once they harass you with their naughty words or offensive gestures, tell them to f*ck off or else all hell will break loose. You fairly know the truth behind the line “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned” so they have been warned by your sharp looks.

5. Solo travel lets you get to know yourself even more

So you think you know yourself? Think again. While doing solo travel, it is inevitable to develop a love-hate relationship with yourself and that is fairly okay. You thought all along that you wouldn’t be able to survive that three-day trek up in the beautiful mountains of Sapa, Vietnam? Maybe you just underestimated yourself. Thinking of quitting your meditation retreat but ended up completing the course? Well then maybe you have mastered the art of detaching from the world even for just a few days and this is where solo travel plays a great part in discovering yourself.

6. Solo travel allows you to fall in love with yourself even more

This may sound too cliché but solo travel absolutely gives you the freedom to fall in love with yourself. And you know what? You can never truly love and trust anybody than the way you do it with yourself. I chanced upon this travel quote while I was traveling in a laid back and lazy town somewhere in Palawan and this deserves a shout out: “When we cannot bear to be alone, it means we do not properly value the only companion we will have from birth to death- OURSELVES.” So take chances and never look back, book that promo ticket and find your way to happiness by falling in love with yourself even more.

Though solo travel is quite liberating for women, we must always remember to take care of ourself. Our number one priority is to enjoy our trip but that doesn’t mean compromising our safety. The first thing you need to do upon arriving is to save the emergency hotline number of the foreign country you’re in so that you can easily speed dial once an unlikely situation arises. Safe travels!
