When are we really grown up? Should we have got it together by our mid-twenties? According to richest.com, “The twenties are known as a time of upheaval – university, grad school, first home, first car, marriage and maybe even children.  It is as much a time for exploration as it is for self-definition.  However, when we compare ourselves to our peers in their twenties (Facebook makes it much easier to do this by the way), we often can’t help but feel lost and lacking (or slacking).”

“Should you really be wearing that?  It shows your stretch marks.”  “Eric Garner would not have died were he not so obese.”  “Stop eating.” (I had an OB-GYN say that to me once, in response to a question about weight loss).  Such comments are frighteningly ubiquitous.  They also reek of body shaming.

Since August 2014, the nude photos of multiple celebrities, including Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton, Ariana Grande, Vanessa Hudgens, Mary-Kate Olsen, Meagan Good and Jill Scott, were leaked when hackers gained access to their Apple iCloud accounts. Since then, the celebrities affected have slammed the attack as an invasion of privacy and reprimanded all those who assisted in the proliferation of their photos.

The beloved Bill Cosby – TV family patriarch, comedian, author and educator – has found himself in a bit of a pickle. Over the past few months, multiple women have come forward alleging that Cosby had raped them. This is not the first time that a public figure has been charged with sexual assault. The infamous DJ Jimmy Saville and former US president Bill Clinton also come to mind in this respect.

There may come a time that you will be offered a salary that may seem too low or even insulting.  But you do not have to accept any and all things offered to you.   A good employer would be inclined to respond to your demands, because if you get what you want and it isn’t too expensive for them, they know that you will most likely stay at their organization as a happy and productive employee. As the Good Book says, “You have not because you ask not.”  The key is to be appropriately and tactfully assertive.
